Dallas-based Blockbuster reaches online subscriber goal
DALLAS Blockbuster, Inc. credited a new program, Blockbuster Total Access, for helping the company reach its 2006 goal of 2 million paying subscribers to its online rental service.
The Dallas-based rental chain said it added more than 500,000 paying subscribers since the end of the third quarter.
Blockbuster Chairman and CEO John Antioco said the company credits its success to the launch of Blockbuster Total Access, which allows online customers to either return DVDs through the mail or at the stores for free in-store movie rentals.
The company beginning in early December and continuing through Dec. 21, 2006 allowed customers of its online rental competitor Netflix to bring in a piece of their red Netflix movie envelopes for a free in-store rental. While Netflix customers did not have to subscribe to Blockbuster's online program to participate in the promotion, they did need to obtain a Blockbuster store membership.
Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), a mail order DVD company, is Blockbuster's biggest competitor. The company projected 6.3 million customers by the end of 2006.

You're most welcome, twisted. I must say that we were in the Netflix camp until Blockbuster offered this deal. Count me in as one of the 500,000 new paying subscribers.

I get an email about once a week from <a href="http://webhobbit.net/?p=10">"NetSux"</a> asking me to 'come back.' They are coming off as a little <em>need</em>y.
