Garland ISD students and teachers win big in essay contest
What can a public school teacher do with $500? Retire, I'd say.
But the real answer is "some lucky Garland ISD elementary school teachers are about to find out, thanks to their award-winning student writers."
Garland's Stormwater Management, which put together a "Be Stormwater Smart" Essay Contest last month, has announced its winners. Garland Independent School District students from 1st through 5th grade participated, with the following winners being selected:
- Evan Jung — Hickman Elementary
- Michael Yates — Rowlett Elementary
- Paul Varnan — Abbett Elementary
- Emma Barrington— Walnut Glen Academy
- Bridgett Jackson — Walnut Glen Academy
- Michelle Smiley — Dorsey Elementary
- Linsey Cumbie — Rowlett Elementary
- Hunter Ralston — Cooper Elementary
- Eric Jung — Beaver MST
- Christine Nguyen — Classical Center at Vial Elementary
All these kids will be rollin' in the dough; first place winners receive $500 each and runners-up receive $300 each. Teachers of winnings students will also receive $500 and/or $300 for runners-up in order to purchase classroom supplies or book that trip to Maui.
Check here for further details.
And as always, Stormwater Management would like to remind you that "an average-sized dog dropping produces 3 billion fecal coliform bacteria."
