Garland ISD begins ‘choice of school’ period

Each year the Garland ISD conducts an annual thirty-day “Choice of School” period during which parents may choose what school they would like their child to attend during the next school year.

For the school year beginning in August of 2007, the annual choice period will begin on January 11 and end on February 9.

Students presently attending Garland ISD schools will be given a color-coded choice of school form. New student for the next year (not currently enrolled in GISD) must have their parent/guardian obtain and complete a large white enrollment form (#SP-999) from a local school campus or from Student Services. Choice of school forms will be sent home with students on January 10. If a parent does not receive a form, they may be obtained from:

  • Your neighborhood Garland ISD school
  • Garland ISD Student Services Center
  • 720 Stadium Drive; Garland, TX 75040 (SE corner of Glenbrook and Stadium Drives-near William Stadium)
  • Harris Hill Administration Building Reception Desk - 501 S. Jupiter Road; Garland, TX 75042 (SW corner of Jupiter and Walnut – across Jupiter from the Forest/Jupiter DART station)

If you are new to the district and need to determine what location is closest to your home, a map of the district is available.

On each form, parents may indicate both a first and a second choice. It is not required that a second choice be indicated for the form to be valid. However, it is highly recommended that parents indicate a second choice. If for some reason the district must deny the first choice, if a second choice has not been indicated, the will be compelled to select a school for the parent. Turning the form in early does not increase the chances of getting into the first or second school of choice.

Changes can be made at any time prior to Friday, February 9. You will be asked to complete a new form if you elect to make a change. After 30-day choice window closes, the choices are binding, except under limited circumstances. If a student does not get the first choice school during the “Choice of School” process, the parent may contact the denied (first choice) school to request to be placed on a waiting list. Quite often, due to families moving out of the area during the summer or a child being accepted to a specialized program, openings will become available at schools.

If a parent does not turn in a Choice of School form, the district will make a choice for you. Choice forms should be signed by the parent unless the student is 18 years or older.

Students enrolled in an elementary bilingual class will need to complete a “Bilingual Choice of School” form. Enrollment in the bilingual program is not large enough to warrant having a bilingual class at every level on every campus. Student enrolled in an elementary ESL (English Second Language) program will need to complete an “ESL Choice of School” form. Elementary ESL is offered only at selected campuses. ESL programs are in place on every middle school and high school campus. For more information you may contact the Language Center at 972-494-8585

As an involved parent, I just pulled my child from Garland ISD. I want to let parents know about a new Southern Association of Colleges & Schools accredited charter school called The Hills Academy. It's part of Vista Academies, which online claims to be the largest charter in Texas. Check them out (and their new Garland location) www.vista-academies.com. Amazing place: learning diagnostic tests upon entering, private tutoring for every student whose grade drops below 80, a computer lab for every grade, blue ribbon curriculum, small classes, FREE tuition because it's a public charter school. Don't settle for an ISD when there are these kinds of options available to your child.
