The term Boogieman (also spelled Boogeyman or bogeyman) means a lot of different things to different people. In most parts of the United States, the common perception of the Boogieman is some unknown figure that lurks under beds and in closets to attack children; usually the bad ones. In Haiti he's called Tonton Macoute, and is the "giant, counterpart to Father Christmas" who kidnaps naughty children. In Japan he's called Namahage and is a demon that warns children not to be lazy or to cry. In Dallas/Fort Worth Boogieman is a badass rapper who is breaking out on the local hip-hop scene. And if he scares your kids too, deal with it.
Boogieman has actually been around the music scene since the mid-90's, working as a promoter for other artists such as Trina, Trick Daddy, and Triple-6 Mafia. This background has given him the experience to move into creating his own music, and thank goodness for that. His most recent release, "Ridin' Candy Paint," features Big Tuck and Ghetto Priest, and has been making its way through the local clubs for some time now.
Dealing with an industry that craves a constant flow of hot, new material, and then quickly forgets, Boogieman and Two-Three Media Group have decided to take a slightly more methodical approach to create music that people will remember for some time. It is still early, and Boogieman has a lot of work to do hitting the pavement and getting his tracks out there, but we shall see in time if this approach can work in such an unforgiving industry.
Check out the interview to hear Boogieman talk about:
- His debut LP By Any Means Necessary, due out early this year, and the single "Ridin' Candy Paint"
- Where he has seen the local rap and hip-hop scene go since he started in the industry and forecasts for the future
- Why Big Tuck's recent release has not met expectations, and what that means for the industry and for Dallas
- Getting paid
- Birthday cake and champagne?
- What drives him to create music
