UPDATED: New Interview: Matthew Buckner from Altar Boyz
From reality television to a fake boy band.
With the highly acclaimed Altar Boyz coming to Dallas next week as part of the Dallas Summer Musicals' Broadway Contemporary Series, I got a chance to talk to the lead singer, Matthew Buckner, while they were beginning their week in Austin.
Matthew Buckner, who ironically plays Matthew in the musical, began singing and dancing as a kid which led him to join the group, the Sunshine Generation. He described it as the typical club where kids sing, dance and entertain around the country at places like retirement homes and amusement parks. With his musical and acting talent, his passion then was to sing and record R&B albums, which led him to be cast on the reality show Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot. The show's aim was to find the next big hip-hop/R&B star, and Matthew ended up in the top three by the finale. But after this experience, he says, "I had a reversal of decisions and wanted to go back to acting. I did not want to do R&B." Fortunately, he landed a great role in Altar Boyz as the "Justin Timberlake" of the band, to whom he is compared all the time (which he states is "not an insult").

When asked about the production, he responded, "The show is a comedy spoof about the final night of Catholic boy band's tour and all that goes wrong." Regular people and celebrities such as Rosie O'Donnell and Kevin Bacon admit to seeing the show countless times and are termed "Altarholics." Mr. Buckner thinks the appeal of the show comes from the fact that "there is something for everyone" since it is "not offensive." There may be some "small pokes" and mild satirizing, but he assures the jokes do not cross the line. The high energy of the show also keeps audiences intrigued, and Matthew credits this to a great cast. I asked him what keeps the show fresh for him after eight shows a week, and he immediately replied: "It is the cast dynamic that brings it up even when there are small audiences."
This is Matthew's first time in Texas, and he is enjoying Austin so far. He is also married (one year anniversary on January 21), and although she is unable to tour alongside, she flies to different cities periodically during the eight month tour. Once the show comes to Dallas, the "boyz" will be going around the city to perform and meet fans after their show. More information about post-show activities is coming soon, and interviews with other cast mates will occur once the show arrives in Dallas. The show runs from January 16-21, and to purchase tickets you can click here.
UPDATED: Here is a list of what the "boyz" are doing after the show:
Tuesday, January 16 - Meet and greet onstage immediately following the show.
Tuesday, January 16 - Appearance at Woody's Cedar Springs for Show Tunes, at 11 p.m.
Thursday, January 18 - Appearance at noon at Border's (West Village).
Thursday, January 18 - Mini-performance after the show at Dick's Last Resort, at 10 p.m.

Good luck finding an open Catholic church during these dates. I'm worried about Kevin Bacon, too.

We appear to be the target of a street team promotion that incents members to earn "communion wafers" by posting comments favorable to the show.

This doesn't mean the show isn't good -- I've heard it is quite good. But it means you shouldn't necessarily decide that based on these comments.

AnneMarie, I'm sure you do love the show. I'm just pointing out a weakness in reviews posted to gain points in a streetteam contest. Most of the Altar Boyz fans have been posting minimal one-liners that say the show is great, but not why. Clearly, that's just to fulfill a requirement.
Why not tell us what is great about the show? What are the best numbers? Who stands out among the cast?
Give us some video links -- something. But posting an "Altar Boyz is great" link doesn't do anyone any good except for those trying to win a contest.

I saw the original cast of Altar Boyz in NYC with Scott Porter as the lead. I wasn't sure how the tour cast would compare, but I must say, this is an exceptional ensemble that plays their parts well. Matt does an incredible job as Matthew and really shines in "Something About You" which always gets a lot of laughs. Ryan is hysterical as Mark and really belts out his "Epiphany" number and practically has the audience standing with applause. Nick also stands out as Abraham, the lone Jew in the group. He has some of the funniest lines in the show. The music to this show is really upbeat and sticks in your mind long after the show is over. The lyrics will keep you rolling all night until the very end when you will be glad you were a part of the Raise the Praise tour!!

First off, I want to point out that while it is true that most of us are posting because we're Altarholics and we get points, we wouldn't be members of the website and willing to do things for points if we didn't think the show was fantastic, though I can see your point, Mr. Orren. I think the show is enhanced if you're a Catholic or someone at least somewhat familiar with Catholic practices because most of the jokes are based on this. However, even if you're not, you'll still catch the humor. The cast are playing members of a Catholic boy band named Matthew (the leader), Mark (the "Sensitive one), Luke (the thug), Juan (the ethnic appeal) and Abraham (who's Jewish). Through the course of the show, which is said to be the last concert of their Raise the Praise tour, you learn a lot about their characters in the midst of 12 incredibly fun to sing along with songs. My favorites are Epiphany by Mark, which isn't what you might think, and I Believe, a beautiful heart warming song at the end. I've seen five performances of this show and have never seen someone after the show who didn't seem to have enjoyed it. And as a great plus, the boyz do a lot of singing and dancing and they're rather pleasant to look at. :) They're also great guys themselves, as I had the pleasure of meeting them in Austin. Please, go see it! You won't regret it!
