ProtectSMU.org aims to unite Methodists against SMU’s bid for the Bush Library
Methodist ministers from around the country are urging SMU to end its bid for the Bush library through a new website called ProtectSMU.org. The ministers believe that it is wrong to link Bush's presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name. The site includes a list of ministers that have come out publicly against SMU's bid for the library as well as a digital petition for others that agree with their position.

Blair Lovern, says:
Statement from SMU:
" The opportunity for a group of United Methodist ministers to circulate a petition reflects the tradition and values of the Church for open dialogue on important issues. Embracing those same values, we at SMU respect their right to express their views. As we have indicated, the presence of the Bush Library and Institute at SMU would support education, research and discussion on the important issues of this era—all activities that reflect the United Methodist heritage in higher education. The South Central Jurisdiction of the Church organized SMU as a Texas non-profit organization under the management and control of a Board of Trustees. Fifty percent of the Board’s membership is United Methodist, including three bishops and two ordained clergy."

Both my wife and myself agree that the Bush Library does not belong at SMU in any shape or forn. He violates everything that Methodist religion stands for.

We are British Methodists who are appalled at the idea of a Methodist institution being saddled in perpetuity with a monument to President Bush's unwise and immoral policies. The proposal to put his Library at SMU must be rejected if our social witness is to be meaningful.
