Asia World Market Grand Opening
Plano Mayor Pat Evans.
Enlarge photo | View thumbnailsAfter our very own Minnie Payne wrote about Plano’s new Asia World Market, I thought I would check out their grand opening shindig. The ceremonies included speeches by owner Eric Chen, Plano Mayor Pat Evans, and Addison Mayor Joe Chow. Many comments were made about the rain, which may have brought the whole ceremony inside, but is considered a sign of prosperity and good fortune in Asian culture. After the speeches, formalities and ribbon cutting, Kung Fu performances were presented by J.K. Wong Kung Fu Tai Chi Academy followed by a traditional dragon dance, and a lion dance team. Following the ceremonies, the lions danced throughout the store aisles.
In addition to the grand opening festivities, the store itself was packed with shoppers. The store has what seems like everything and more to cook all walks of Asian cuisine, although I did feel a little bad for the live soft shell turtles with the little pig noses they had for sale. Even if you are not well versed in the ways of Asian cooking, the store has something for everyone.

I didn't see any at the new market when I stopped by on Saturday (inadvertently stumbling across the grand opening festivities). Their tea selection is heavily weighted toward Chinese teas, with only a few Japanese options. However, I have bought matcha (powdered green tea) at May Hua -- Park and Coit in Plano -- in the past.

Actually, Teresa, I thought it was seaweed tea when I bought it. (That erroneous "fact" was confirmed by a May Hua manager.) But realizing what it was after the fact, I have used it for drinking.

Teresa - I saw a bunch of instant tea, I'm guessing that's the same as powdered tea?? I was also pretty excited about the box of jasmine tea I bought for a dollar.
