Dallas-based Access Pharmaceuticals receives chemotherapy patent

Company's oral rinse will be used to fight mouth ulcers.

— Access Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday that it has been approved for a patent to make a product used to manage oral mucositis, a side-effect from radiation and chemotherapy.

The company also received marketing clearance in December from the Food and Drug Administration for its product, MuGard.

MuGard is an oral rinse product used for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis, or painful ulcers in the mouth. The market for oral mucositis is estimated to exceed $1 billion world-wide, said Access Pharmaceuticals. The company estimates that up to 40 percent of cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy are affected by oral mucositis.

MuGard is not to be confused with Mooterus, the Stars' discontinued third jersey.
