Two area teachers deemed outstanding by UT alumni org

Two local teachers are among the 12 selected to receive the 2007 Texas Exes Teaching Awards for Outstanding Teachers by the "Texas Exes," The University of Texas at Austin’s alumni association. Kay Fluitt, who teaches history at Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville will receive The Lillian B. Rhodes Teaching Award, while Judy Heaps, an English teacher at West Mesquite High School in Mesquite will be given The Mrs. Harold B. Myers Teaching Award.

The teachers will be honored during the Conference on Texas Excellence in Education on Feb. 15-16 at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center on The University of Texas campus.

If the teachers play their cards right, this'll be the bronze sculpture they're awarded.

The Texas Exes awards recognize teachers who are supportive of their students, bring credit to the teaching profession, and are held in highest regard by students, fellow teachers, administrators, students’ parents, and community. The Texas Exes, in collaboration with the university’s College of Education, have administered the awards since 1987, honoring 227 teachers through the years.

Each honoree receives $2,250, a custom-designed bronze sculpture, many other honors and recognitions, and is brought to the two-day conference free-of-charge.
