Women’s basketball - South Alabama 72, UNT 57

Try as they did, the North Texas women’s basketball team couldn’t get over hump in a 72-57 loss to South Alabama at the Mitchell Center. The Mean Green (5-14, 2-7), down by double figures for most of the game, rallied on three separate occasions but couldn’t get past the Jaguars. The loss is the seventh in the last eight games for North Texas

“It was disappointing because we just didn’t get any consistency,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We played well at times and at other times we let them get some easy buckets. It’s hard to play from behind but we kept battling out there and I was pleased with our effort”

Tricia Lee scored the initial points of the game to make it 3-0, but after that South Alabama (10-11, 4-7) took the lead and never relinquished it for the remainder of the game. After a 15-0 run by the Jaguars to make it 15-3, the Mean Green responded for the first time.

Sanetra Jackson hit two 3-pointers to spur a 14-4 run to cut the Jaguar lead to just one at 19-18 midway through the first half. South Alabama answered with a 14-4 run of its own to extend its lead to 33-22 with 2:21 left in the half. Down by eight at the break, the Mean Green cut the Jaguar lead to 37-34 four minutes into the second half.

South Alabama once again came back with another run, this one 9-2, to make it 46-36 at the 13:08 mark in the game.

North Texas had one final run that cut the lead to 54-52 with 7:33 left in the game. Following a turnover, South Alabama put the game away for good when Amanda Leonard and Whitney Woodard knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers.

Amber Jackson scored a team-high 14 points and reached double figures for the fourth time straight game. Sanetra Jackson, coming off the bench, also scored in double figures with 11 points.

North Texas is back in action on Wednesday night as they host the Troy Trojans at the Super Pit.
