Farmers Branch Hispanic activist rejected by Rotary Club

5

— According to a story in the Star-Telegram, Farmers Branch Hispanic activist/restaurateur Elizabeth Villafranca attempted to join the Farmers Branch Rotary Club as the only Latina and one of three women in the approximately 35 member club, but was rejected on June 18.

“I was astounded that they [Rotary board members] would reject a Hispanic woman who always carries herself with diplomacy and in an ethical way,” said Linda Haddock, friend/Rotary member who sponsored Villafranca, in an interview today. “She’s one of the rare people that I’ve met who walks the talk of the four-way test.”

The Rotary ethical test is:

1. “Is it the TRUTH?”

2. “Is it FAIR to all concerned?”

3. “Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?”

4. “Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”

“I was thrilled when I was invited to the Rotary Club meeting, and when I went on the Rotary Web site, I said ‘WOW I’ve been living the four-way test all my adult life,’” Villafranca said. “I knew that it was a non-political organization and was surprised when they rejected my membership.”

Tim O’Hare, instigator of Ordinance 2903, requiring apartment owners and managers to obtain proof of citizenship or proof of legal residence from people desiring to rent apartments or renew leases which passed in the May 12 election, is on the Rotary board and was a staunch rival of Villafranca while rallying for Ordinance 2903.

Dave Blair, former Farmers Branch mayor, and one of the six founding members of the Rotary Club, said that he was only told that Villafranca was rejected because she did not qualify for the four-way test.

“I have no reason to believe that she would not be a good member,” he said. “It would provide diversity that the club really needs in adding another woman and a Hispanic which would be very beneficial.”

Two board members and Rotary District Governor Richard Gilman of Richardson could not be reached for comment.

Farmer's Branch needs to change it's name to Ku Klux Klansville. What a stupid bunch of uptight white fundamentalist bigots. Who will do your lawns now you bunch of rubes? I am proud to say I never knew any of you. I have gone South to the border to provide medical care to the likes of people you are trying to self righteously kick out of your neighborhoods you sick bunch of neoNazis. Dr John Paul Schwartz

For a relatively small, and formerly not well known town, Farmers Branch is really making a name for itself.

Their citizenship ordinance was bad enough. Then there was a recent story about trying to build a welcoming identity.

"FB leaders seek new image after immigration dustup. Farmers Branch is suffering an identity crisis. So say city leaders who are on a mission to come up with a brand, an identity or an event – something that people will come to associate with the name Farmers Branch.

They seem to be leaning toward creating an All-American city, with giant flags, a patriotic park and some kind of spectacular patriotic festival.

"I think we're just kind of struggling to find something new and different that would make us stand out and hopefully entice some people to come to our city and live and work," City Council member Ben Robinson said." http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent...

And now this incredible personal vendetta that speaks poorly of both Farmers Branch and its Rotary Club. FB isn't seeking a new image. They've found one. And it isn't an image I'd want for my community.

Dear Dr. Schwartz:

Being a doctor, I did not realize you had such an angry disposition and such hatred (e.g. slur words) toward other white persons. Nevermind for a minute that I am American Indian (that's Native American to you), I am completely offended that you would take to the same measures, and beyond, to seize the peace in this forum and anger the uneducated mobs toward violence with such inflamatory language. You said (of white people), "What a stupid bunch of uptight white fundamentalist bigots. Who will do your lawns now you bunch of rubes?"

Your language also contradicts itself. You criticize whites for bigotry, and then, even in the same breath, you reduce and restrict hispanics to "lawn cutters" as though they could get no better job. I'm sure that Ms. Villafranca, the woman of concern in this article, is not going to be your friend after calling her a name like that.

While you verbally attempt to deny that you are such a bigot, the venom appears to be already in your brain, as exemplified by your own hate and anger and language.

You'll have to "Do better". Because in my mind, you're all illegal immigrants.

Dear Tejun, I am simply tired of the two faced lies such as this ordinance always disguised as noble truths espoused by the radical right over the years. In my youth, there was a position taken by many called "State's Rights". It said that states could refuse to obey Federal orders to desegregate. By never saying we hate other races, they could calmly advocate a position that was in line with peers who advocated segregation who would not overtly express those views. The same thing is being done by these ordinances. By passing such laws, they make every person who is of another race suspect. If a person cannot speak English, they are assumed to be an illegal. The other fact here is that entry level jobs that so many immigrants, both legal and illegal take is in the landscape and agricultural industry. We are already seeing a problem with agriculture in areas of the country where crackdowns are in effect. Fewer people are showing up for these jobs. Many crops are now going unharvested for the lack of workers. This is sad, because so much of our economy has been built on illegal workers for so many years. (It didn't happen overnight!) Maybe if the neocons would adopt a simple pragmatic approach like they usually do to financial and economic problems, they would see this is the only viable solution to the deficits in the work force. I am not stereotyping any race as a group of "yard mowers", as Diego Rivera and Freida K. were as far from that as a human could be. I was simply talking about the realities of life in the USA. I would refer you to Tom Russel's song from his newest album on the same subject. And the city ordinance the city fathers have tried to pass is still inexcusably stupid. And I have the highest respect for Ms. Villafranca. And you are right, we did steal the land, I moved to Southwest Texas to try to pay back that debt by providing health care to those descendents who have never been able to "share the wealth". And that's a fact. We are all suffering as a result of Western greed. Dr. J.P. Schwartz
