Moments ago, Lancaster ISD sent out the following press release regarding their request for a waiver for a four day school week calendar:
The Lancaster Independent School District, after much deliberation with the Texas Education Agency, board members, legal staff, policy advisors, parents, students and staff, has rescinded its request for a waiver for a four day school week calendar for the 2007-2008 school year. The waiver request was withdrawn for two reasons:
1. Possible conflict with employee contracts if a four day week was implemented this year.; and
2. Less than 30 days before the start of school.
While we are rescinding our waiver for the 2007-2008 school year, we are excited to inform you that we are establishing a Blue Ribbon Committee to refine and enhance the four day school week waiver for implementation for the 2008-2009 school year. The committee will consist of parents, students, teachers, staff, community members, faith-based community members, Chamber of Commerce representatives and city government representatives. The committee will work tirelessly to create a more comprehensive plan for a four day school week for the 2008-2009 school year.
Dr. Lewis, board members and staff are committed to excellence in academic achievement for every student in the Lancaster Independent School District. They understood that such an innovative and “out of the box” endeavor would create a high level of interest among citizens in Lancaster and across the state. Dr. Lewis and his staff are committed to their philosophy of “Only Those Who See the Invisible Can Do the Impossible.” They will continue to seek new ways to improve teaching and learning in Lancaster I.S.D. and are keenly aware that this type of innovative proposal will lead to constructive dialogue and future improvements for students.
Although there was tremendous support about the waiver plan, there remained many questions and concerns. That is why trustee Carolyn Morris, spoke on behalf of some Lancaster residents when she stated to TEA officials “she was not for or against the waiver, she just wanted all sides to be heard.” Dr. Lewis stated that as we look ahead he is confident Lancaster residents are committed to academic performance for all students.
We would like to thank Acting Commissioner Robert Scott and Associate Commissioner Adrain Johnson for their considerable time, effort and input working with the district as we pursued the four day school week. We look forward to their continued support and input as we prepare to revise our four day week proposal for the 2008-2009 school year.
In closing, the Lancaster Independent School District is committed to doing whatever is necessary to ensure that all of our students achieve at a high level and become global citizens that will make a positive and profound difference for generations.
Please have your students bring their completed summer reading assignments on the first day of school, August 27, 2007. We look forward to an outstanding school year in 2007-2008.
There will be a press conference today July 31, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lancaster ISD administration building board room.

Once again LISD, dodged a bullet, but this does not end the battle. When Lewis wants something, he is determined to not give up even if the community is against him. I'm afraid, we still have a fight on our hands.
Thanks, Ms. Morris for your hard work.

Perhaps this near fiasco and embarrassment to Lancaster will prove to be the catalyst in finally moving substantial numbers of parents to action and continued involvement. Let's hope so for the sake of our children and the entire community.

Looks like they've got more problems. TEA just announced academic ratings and Lancaster High School is listed as academically unacceptable.

Just for the thrill of it all, let's ask for the public records of all the meetings and names of the members, on the site based committees, that discussed and were notified of the 4 day week proposal. You know let's ask for the information TEA, requested. Oh goody, not going to happen. Why? Information does not exist you think?
Go back to the early 2000's and maybe further and you will find that LISD, never had an academicly unacceptable school. Not until the district demi-god rode in on the scene, did this start to happen...
Could it be that he got rid of some of the wrong teachers? And kept some that should have gone, or been let go, due to their students scores being so low, or could it be Lewis, hired some children of friends and family members and trustees not experienced in teaching but, just needing jobs?
Now you do know Lewis, has a free hand to hire, whom he pleases without board consent....Ooops! I forgot, the usual five count of trustees have given up all rights to question hiring.
Not an accusation just an observation.
If this writer is accused of lying, or misleading, or giving out false information, please point out; what, I lied about. And where, I can find supporting information, that what I wrote is a lie.
Maybe we should all say, if what we write is wrong, please let us know where the correct information is to be found and we will fall on our swords, so to speak, and say we were wrong.
Adults do it all the time, if not, we should. RIGHT???
We all want to learn the rules, laws and policies, that Lewis follows, RIGHT?

The comments below were orignally posted on the wrong news letter:
Hooray!!! Hooray!!!
The children of LancasterISD and their parents, need a break. From confusion and assignments, with no support system being in place, and being accused of being or becoming sexual deviants by their superintendent.
No commentor at the 4 day, public meeting said or accused, the children of being thieves either. They did state that, children left unsupervised, left the door open for many, misdeeds. An agrument, I know Lewis, has used to push sports and the arts.
But what about all the comments from Lewis, over the years about the uncaring, neglectful and disinterested parents in this district. What do you call those, type of statements?
Oh that is Lewis speak. Got it? He speaks, it is correct.
Or how about him saying late in the night, of the public meeting on the 4 day proposal, with only a small group of people left, that all those that thanked him for the summer and winter reading program lied when they said they were with him. He said, "they only said so now, that the programs are successful."
By what standards and what benmchmarks?
Oh and I don't mean, those made up by folks..who work in the district and can not count well. Like, the number of real hours, that would have been left for instruction, with the 4 day plan.
TEA, did the math and guess what? The numbers did not add up, to the numbers given or impied by the superintendent and his staff.
And the reading programs, at the High School level according to the the TEA's, recently released list of academically unaccceptable, schools, may not be so good and successful either.
I love that the summer reading program is touted as a success. What is the telephone hot line number if a student or parent needs clarity, with an asignment? I am glad and proud of all the reading scores going up and as I understand it, once a student reads better, they do better in all subjects. Huh!
Just my thoughts, now what did we learn?
Should anyone think, that any of the above statements are not true, false or wrong, please let me know where to find the correct information.
I always open to the truth and learning new thing.
And hello and where are you Ms. Sheilia? I have miss your supportative comments of Lewis, of late. Could it be you are learning new things?

So you call out my name from behind some screen. Fine. I'll hear you better when you stand up at some Board of Trustee meeting and say your name and your address and what makes you informed to talk about the district and then you tell the Board and Doctor Lewis what you THINK they do wrong.
Until then you just being funny.

I will speak out at a board meeting, just as soon as you admit, you are Shelia Stansmore or whomever, at a public meeting.
I didn't call out your name or you either missy, I just said: I missed your supportative commentary of the district.
Maybe, you should consider having someone read the postings for you and then, helping you understand them, because your conclusions are all off and wild as can be.
I meant, what I wrote and I was not being funny.
Could you suggest, encourage or point out the benefits of Lewis, asking TEA, to come and do a real audit. You know with real CPA's. Also, whatever happened to the districts certified and qualified Chief Fianancial Officer, Mr. Eugene Smith? Could he not answer why we have no money one day and next we do?
Oh but I forgot, Lewis seemed to always have all the finanical answers even with Smith, in the room. Hmmmm!!!
