West Plano yard sale report: Friday for a change
You don't often find reflective sun-shades at yard sales.
Mission: Try Friday rather than Saturday.
I decided to try yard-sale-ing on Friday. Less than half of the sales start on Friday but it’s trending more in that direction.
The good thing about Friday is that the people having sales are retired so they don’t have a bunch of toys and crap. The bad thing is that you are competing with rush-hour traffic. If you see a sign three lanes over, it’s harder to make quick turns.
On Friday, you have less competition; there are less people. But the ones who are there are professionals -- dealers, people looking for stuff to sell in their shops. You can just tell. They’ve got big trucks to go, and they're looking at bigger ticket items, not old pillows and glassware.
All of the sales I went to were around the back of the houses. You have to park on the street and walk between the houses and go around behind. There's usually a huge fence. When I have the dog I always ask first, "Is it OK?" Almost everybody today said, "YES, we’re dog people, what kind of dog is that?" One woman had a dog in her lap. The dog was really old. She said, "Yeah, you’ll see how excited my dog gets." It just sat there and didn’t do a thing.
The first place I went to, I found one of those visor shades you put in the windshield of your car. I'd looked for one last year, but couldn’t find one because the summer was over and they weren't selling them anymore. It wasn't anything I went out looking for or expected to find. You don't see them very often at yard sales.
It was silver; that's what I wanted, because it seems more reflective. It folds up easily, and it has a Velcro strap, as opposed to an elastic strap -- those wear out. It’s exactly what I would have picked out if I had bought one new. I asked how much she wanted, she said 50 cents, so that was good.
Then I came to this one place that had computer chairs. The chair I have is one of the cheapest models on the market. It’s a $25 cheapo chair. This guy had two nicer ones for $15 each. They were hardly worn, they were in real nice shape. I gave it a lot of thought. I was back and forth on it. I don’t need another chair, I have a chair. So I asked if he'd take $10 for one. He said yeah. So I got a really nice, more comfortable computer chair for $10. Now I'll have to find something to do with my old chair.
Today's take: Sun-shade for car, computer chair.
Total: $10.50.

Wow, that's a nice chair. It has adjustable arms. Those don't come on cheap chairs. I bet the arms alone are worth 10 bucks apiece. Yup, hell of a buy. Is it fireproof? Just wondering ...

Erin Rice, says:
When I was in college and I needed to get rid of old furniture, or say, a chemistry book that I couldn't get my money back for, I would just throw it out the window... of my 7th story dorm room... sometimes on fire if there was snow on the ground. Maybe you could do that with your old chair? Just a thought, an irrational thought, but a thought nonetheless. I think I've shared too much... I advise against doing anything I just wrote.
