The North Central Texas Council of Governments has crafted a new campaign in the War on Dog Poop.
Titled "Doo the Right Thing," the awareness program encourages dog owners throughout D-FW to
- scoop up your dog's poop as soon as it deploys
- contain said poop in a receptacle (plastic bag) and flush it down your own toilet on a later date
Basically, the NCTCG would prefer that you walk around with poop in your purse or pocket, because the alternative—letting your dog's excrement fester in the grass—poses serious health risks.
According to Star-Telegram writer Nathaniel Jones (no relation), the campaign "aims to prevent pounds of poo from the estimated 1.2 million dogs in Dallas-Fort Worth from leaking into creeks, rivers and lakes, which can cause a health issue for swimmers and boaters."
In his whimsical post, Jones offers loads more information, noting that "softer poo can be left in the bag and discarded in the trash," coaxing pet owners to "be creative in re-using materials for picking up pet droppings" and detailing the dirty process.

We're a scooping family, and it always drives me crazy to see those who don't.
But as TD suggests, larger animals are worse. Those people who ride horses around White Rock Lake and don't pick up after them are a menace. Anyone who's come blazing around a curve on the bike trail into a pile of horse pucky knows what I mean.
I've never referred to our pup's bidness as "deployment" though.

well, maybe just as alan has initiated a discussion on the correct terminology for chesty mcmuffins, we could start another one here on the right term for doo. as alan says, this IS a professional news organization

I prefer to call crap "crap" and tits "tits," but that's just me.
I'm not sure flushing dog crap is the way to go. The water treatment plants already have enough to do. Put it in a bio-degradable bag like these and throw it in the landfill or, better yet, use it in the compost bin.

Hooray for compost bins!
It's a nice thought, but what do they suggest we do with the people dropping trou' in the Browder Street Mall?

We need a "Good Neighbor" policy: take two bags the next time you walk your doggin' and pick up its poo and a poo left behind.
It's the least we can do....

It would help if whoever is responsible for those bag dispensers in the popular dog-walking areas around downtown would actually keep them stocked. I know it's just a convenience, and we should be bringing our own bags down, but don't put up a dispenser and then leave it empty for weeks at a time. Either stock them or take them down.

I'm liking bring a bag for your dog and stuff one in the dispenser scene. Also, a real, overnight homeless shelter somewhere.

As a scooper who, until recently, lived in a scooping neighborhood, my biggest pet peeve isn't the non-scooping...it's the folks who scoop and then dump the doo into MY trash cans.
I'd rather sidestep another dog's poo than to open my trash cans on a hot summer day.
I double bag the poo before I throw it away to avoid olfatory offense for myself and my sanitation workers...
Seems that would be the least a neighbor could do if they insist on using someone else's trash cans as Doo Disposal Dumpsters.

A "real overnight shelter"?? Some people prefer sleeping under the stars....especially when the Voices in their head tell them to.

It's not like sleeping on a pile of Observers and LaDias outside of Neiman Marcus is a choice someone would make in the same vein as an overnight bike trip in Moab.
If a city provides tax abatements to WalMart, they could probably look to provide a little clean water and a roof to a few of the people otherwise laying around downtown.
