UT Dallas delays dormitory hall construction, but it will likely suck regardless
UT Dallas's plan to construct a residence hall (read: dormitory) and dining facility (read: cafeteria) has been pushed back another year.
While I have no picture of my former place, here is another UTD student praising Waterview for bringing the joy of winter weather into his home.
Aimed to offer an alternative to the campus' apartment complex, Waterview apartments, the dorms were initially slated for completion in 2008. However, experts are now looking to finish by Spring 2009, while the facility's first horde of residents (read: guinea pig freshmen) are scheduled to move in Fall of 2009.
Apparently, the project has been delayed "to allow more time to decide what features to include in the design," says Matthew Grief, director of housing operations, to the UTD Mercury.
As of now, the initial design will accommodate roughly 400 students. Each occupant will have their own living space, and each unit could include a common dining area, living area and bathroom with individual sinks.
"It's basically an apartment without a kitchen," Grief tells the Mercury, but also suggests that "students can expect to pay slightly more than they would in [the] Waterview [apartments]."
Well, that's great news. As a former Waterview resident (who moved out last weekend) and current UTD student, I can verify that my crummy, cracked, grimy, micro-waveless, gloomy two-bedroom apartment—with its illustrious view of a parking lot, its poop-smelling bathroom water and its complete absence of any electric light in the living room—was not overpriced at all, and I would gladly pay more than $435 a month (technically now $500 after a ten-percent hike) for a chance to live in a smaller and more expensive place that doesn't even have its own kitchen. Good, Grief.

Why is that college students think they ought to be treated with the lap of luxury? I frankly think college students would benefit by having LESS than the best living standards.
What do I know anyway? Universities aren't about achieving any level of intellectual discipline any longer. They are about serving up prospective employees. They don't serve students who must cultivate some level of discipline and respect for their own intellectual potentials and for the intellectual and social histories of the world. They serve customers nowadays.
They serve customers so that those customers can go out and get salaries to buy big screen TVs. They can then put those big screen TVs in their 4 plus bedroom houses in Allen -- sorry I couldn't resist -- and forget everything they learned in favor of thinking that Bill O'Reilly or some other schmuck represents some reasonable view of the world.

J Mort: um, I don't know about the "lap of luxury/Bill O'Reilly" scenario. I just wanted a nicer place if I'm gonna pay $500/month.

Chad,
My satirical rant might have a tongue somewhere in its cheek... buy only maybe and maybe only slightly, but maybe not.

I'm afraid the Waterview is about as good as it gets in that price range.

Yeah, this is a two bedroom, so both me and my former roommate would be paying $500 a piece if we were still here. Not a good deal.

Who needs a KITCHEN when you can have a CAFETERIA!
Christ. I guess some people absolutely need to be crammed into a dorm to be social.
