Dallas Kroger meat cutters hold off on strike … for now
Though they originally planned to go on strike last Sunday, meat-cutting employees from Kroger's grocery store chain met with representatives of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 540 in Dallas and agreed to hold off . . . for now.
However, Kroger employees in Texas—including some 400 Dallas-area meat cutters—could still go on strike if they fail to see improvements in what they believe are the company's lackluster health care benefits.
Employees from the Dallas-area stores have joined the fight that began with Houston UFCW Locals 455 and 408 members.
"This is Texas-style UFCW solidarity," said Johnny Rodriguez, UFCW Local 540 President. "Kroger meat cutters in Dallas aren't going to let Kroger kick around our brothers and sisters in Houston. Every Kroger member in Texas deserves respect and fairness from this company."
Sidenote: Kroger is the only Dallas area supermarket chain with a union-represented workforce.
