Photographs Do Not Bend celebrates the Latin woman’s vision with Mirada de Mujer

PDNB Gallery is celebrating the Latin Woman's vision with a group exhibition of classic and contemporary photographs, Mirada de Mujer. Artists included in this important exhibition: Mariana Yampolsky, Flor Garduño, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Graciela Iturbide, Cristina García Rodero, Delilah Montoya and Marta María Pérez Bravo. All the photographers all have Latin roots.

This exhibition does not really classify a woman's vision or a Latin vision. It merely unfolds a rich landscape of imagery perhaps only a Latin woman can see. For example, Lola Alvarez Bravo's portraits of the painter Frida Kahlo reveal more than this enigmatic subject. Bravo allows into the frame the mirrors and objects and pets that meant so much to Frida, as Frida included in her own paintings. Flor Garduño's breathtaking image of a woman carrying a basket of lilies is equated with a basket of light. The image is rich in beauty. And out of the brutal desert landscape of Mexico a lone woman appears in Graciela Iturbide's famous photograph, Mujer Angel, Desierto de Sonora. The photograph was taken behind the woman as she hiked along a hillside lugging a boom box at her side. The juxtaposition of the portable stereo, the traditionally (feminine) clothed Mexican woman and the desolate landscape poignantly portrays a woman's physical and cultural journey. (This particular image plays on current political discussions as well.)

All women have had exhibitions in Dallas, Rodero and Garduño had solo exhibitions at the Meadows Museum, while others have been featured in various group and solo shows at PDNB Gallery. And all artists are represented in major museum collections in the U.S. and other countries.

This is a special opportunity to view work by a powerful group of women artists.
