Dallas-based Blockbuster commits to Blue-ray format for high-def rentals
It's like VHS versus Beta all over again.
Blockbuster announced that it'll start renting high-definition DVDs in the Blu-ray format only -- leaving the rival "HD DVD" format out in the cold.
Blockbuster was renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in its initial HD foray at 250 stores, but found that customers chose Blu-ray more than 70 percent of the time. The company is about to expand its HD rentals into 1,450 stores, and decided to commit to Blu-ray only. The 250 original stores will still offer both Blue-ray and HD DVD.
All of the major studios except Universal are releasing films in Blu-ray; Disney has gone with Blu-ray exclusively. Sony's PlayStation 3 game console is also Blu-ray.
Of course, the stupidity is that the two formats are incompatible. And of course, neither plays on a regular DVD player.
