Leppert impresses South Dallas church by showing up day after election

— CBS 11 was there when new mayor Tom Leppert showed up at Friendship West Baptist Church on Sunday, which he said was "on his to-do list" for the day after the campaign. Wow, that's inspiring, et cetera and so on, but what's really entertaining about the story are the words of Friendship West's Senior Pastor Frederick Haynes. He calls Leppert "a cool cat who refused to change his spots" and he also uses the expression "works my last Black nerve," as in: "One of the things that politicians do that works my last Black nerve is that they show up one Sunday, maybe during the campaign, and then after the campaign is over, they vanish."

JW Richard, says:

Too bad his "black nerve" isn't worked by the notion that these political visits happen in the first place! What is it about white politicians making a political appearance at a black church that seem to get black people all beaming with pride, as if now they've been given the keys to the city? And I guess the congregation is supposed to be "down" with Leppert 'cause he's "cool cat", huh? Right now, it's not Leppert's "spots" I'm worried about.

Shawn Williams, says:

I saw Leppert and his wife coming in for the 2nd service as I left the first. He was @ Friendship-West so much during the campaign that I expected him to accept the alter call at some point.

From the people I talked to and from the way Mr. Leppert ran his race, I'm not surprised he would understand the statement he would make by showing up at FWBC Sunday morning.

Dr. Haynes has referred to the political Sunday circuit as "the black church pimpin' tour", so he realizes full well what usually happens. But I don't remember Leppert ever speaking in his 4 or 5 Sunday visits (politicians save Royce West rarely get the mike on Sunday).

Dr. Haynes I'm sure respected the fact that Leppert attended a number of church events, including the Faith Summit on Poverty. Though it may have been surprising to some, Mr. Leppert's presence was not that big of a deal.
