“Audie’s Place” VFW hall on Lakeland closed
WHITE ROCK HILLS When I heard that there was a poker bust at our neighborhood "VFW Hall" (quotes intentional), which was also known as "Audie's Place," I wondered how much longer it would last. The crowds went from overwhelming to virtually nonexistent.
When driving by there today, I noticed that the place looked abandoned. Turns out it had been for a while -- There was a lockout letter from the landlord dated June 7.
What cracked me up, though, was the address and salutation on the letter. It was addressed to:
Mr. Audie L Murphy - VFW Post 1837
And began:
"Dear Audie:"
I hope they don't plan on recovering the rent.

April Powell, says:
I must admit that I also raised an eyebrow about "Audie's Place" before its recent demise.
Because it seemed to exist solely for the purpose of housing poker nights, I questioned whether it was even a real VFW Post.
Turns out I unduly maligned the place. According to vfw.org, the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VFW Post 1837 is an authentic post. You can find out more about the Post and its history at its website: http://www.vfwpost1837.com/
Unfortunately, the website is quite out of date and does not indicate where the Post has moved now that it's vacated the Lakeland Road address.

Now I'm sympathetic to the poker cause and agree that the cops have better things to do. BUT, to characterize this as a simple fundraising game for some good ol' vets is a bit naive -- There were more than 100 cars in this parking lot six nights a week. Even with the smallest rake, that's some big bucks going somewhere.
