What the Mavs need from tonight’s draft
The draft provides a great excuse for Mavs fans to talk NBA in the off-season, but for this team I predict it will be little more than that. The best thing Dallas could do is stay under the radar tonight while all the wheeling and dealing is going on at Madison Square Garden. This off season should first and foremost be about free-agency for the Mavs. Bringing in a Matt Barnes or PJ Brown will have a much bigger impact on Dallas' plans next season than anyone they get from the college ranks.
But given that the Mavs need to do something with their #34 pick, there is no question that I'd like to see the Mavs select Sun Yue, otherwise known as the Chinese "Magic" because of his 6'9" point guard frame. That is the kind of player that can rekindle the spirit of Wang Zhi-Zhi throughout the AAC. And by that I mean, the fans will go bananas for the Chinese "Magic" (yes, bananas) every time Avery lets him in the game. He won't even need to do anything but stand there and let the fans lift the rest of the Mavs play up with some old school Reunion-style rowdiness.
Forget shooting t-shirts into the stands or dancing fat people, the only entertainment I need during a blowout victory is to hear "Humble" Billy say, "Now entering the game for the Mavs, DJ Mbenga and Sun "the Chinese Magic" Yue. That alone is worth season tickets to me.
