Why Sammy Sosa shouldn’t be on the All-Star Team

3

Classic Sammy

There is a good possibility that Sammy Sosa could end up as the only face representing the Rangers at this year's All Star Game in San Fransisco. But the only reason he is in the running is because his name elicits memories of a steroid induced home run icon. If the fans wanted to be reminiscent and vote Sammy in then fine, but they didn't. Now the decision is in the hands of Detroit manager Jim Leyland. And if you ask me, manager picks for the All Star Team should be based on the performance individual players show in the current season. Sammy may be fun to watch, but he certainly isn't one of the elite on-field performers anymore. But don't think that I'm not the nostalgic type. I want Sammy to be part of the All Star festivities. But to me, the aging Sammy Sosa is who home run derbies were made for.

I agree that he's not the Sammy of old, but the guy is coming up clutch in the RBI category. He's fifth in the AL and if he were still in the NL, he'd be No. 3. And that's not too bad. I hated the guy when he was with the Cubs, but I admit I do have a touch of a spot a soft spot for him now.

Michael Young is still a much better pick. He is a better all around hitter. Also he seems to be much more of a leader in the clubhouse. Oh, and did I mention that Young actually fields when he's in the lineup?

I like having Sammy on the Rangers, but he isn't deserving of the All Star Game this season. Michael Young should be the Rangers representative.
