New wave of plays and musicals for the metroplex this weekend

Here is a list of the shows that are beginning their run this weekend, so make sure to see one while you can:

  • A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, presented by ONSTAGE in Bedford. Hank Morgan, a teenager who works on his school’s stage crew, is knocked out and finds himself transported back to the thrilling days of King Arthur where he predicts a lunar eclipse and is hailed as a great wizard. He is knighted “Sir Boss” and sets about modernizing Camelot but the King’s half-sister plots against the kingdom. Tickets ($10-12) can be purchased online or by calling 817-354-6444.
  • The Front Porch, presented by Azle Arts Association's Popcorn Players. This heart-warming story follows the lives of two families and their love that they share for one another. The story plays out from early adulthood and takes you on a roller-coaster journey through the families' elder years together. Call 817-944-3537 for reservations ($5-10).
  • Oliver!, presented by Company of Rowlett Performers. In the middle of Victorian England, Oliver, an orphan boy makes his way to London after being thrown out of the workhouse for asking for more porridge. He is taken in by Fagin and his gang of girl and boy thieves who earn their living pick-pocketing. Oliver finds his wealthy grandfather and cousin but is still in danger from the evil Bill Sikes, the murderer and thief who fences Fagin's stolen goods, and who fears that Oliver will reveal his and the gang's identities. Tickets to the musical are $10-15 and can be purchased online.
  • Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, presented by McKinney Summer Musicals. A love story about seven brothers who, after reading about the Roman capture of the Sabine women, decide to kidnap the young women they want for their own wives. Reserve advanced tickets ($10-15) online.
  • Damn Yankees, presented by the Grand Prairie Arts Council. Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the devil for the chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. The show also closes this Sunday, so call 972-642-2787 for tickets ($9-13).
