Calithump’s Hootenanny to pay tribute to Roky Erickson tonight

NOT Roky Erickson playing, but a lot of the area's best paying tribute.

— Got this info over the transom from Carlin Stultz on what should be a really cool show at The Doublewide tonight. I hope that admonition at the end isn't just because of us: Someone had this show down in our events calendar as Roky himself.

Callithump's "Dallas Hoot Night" featuring the music of 13th Floor Elevators** as done by American Werewolf Academy , Brent Best (of The Drams & formerly Slobberbone), Nate Fowler's Elixir, Van Zandt County Singers (members of The Shapes) & Mike Clark (from intodown) at Double-Wide, 3510 Commerce St, Dallas. $5, 21+, 9pm.

What is a "hoot night" you may Ask: It's a gathering of musicians who play songs based on an assigned theme. We'll be starting out with tribute shows where bands can play a few songs by a determined artist. Past hoots have included Beach Boys & Rolling Stones.

How will it work: 4-6 bands will get set up ahead of time through Callithump to play & will get renditions of songs prepared by the hoot night artist of the month. They'll get to play & perhaps switch up with other musicians from other bands.

When & Where: The first Thursday of every month at Double-Wide, 3510 Commerce, Dallas.

Want to play: Then e-mail me if interested. I approach bands that I think would be ideal to cover certain artists, but appreciate feedback & artists interest.

Some history: "'Hootenanny' was originally an old country word for "party". The concept of a Hootenanny as a gathering for folk singing was created by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie as a way to raise rent for their Greenwich Villiage, NY apartment. A hootenanny is a gathering at which folksingers entertain often with the audience joining in. There is much music and dancing and food."

"The Hoot Night started in Austin, Texas about 15 years ago. Working musicians were unable to catch each other's gigs on Fridays and Saturdays so in an effort to maintain their sense of community they grabbed a Wednesday once a month at a local watering hole and played their songs for each other. In an effort to entertain each other, they brought their favourite songs from their libraries and impressed each other with new interpretations. Soon, mandatory themes emerged to keep things interesting. The Beatles vs. The Monkees, Colours, Food, Santa vs. Satan, Elvis vs. Elvis, Sex, Burt Bacharach vs. Bob Dylan, The Cure vs. Diana Ross, Numbers...whatever anyone thought of! The secret was soon out and this 'industry night' quickly developed a devoted fan base who wouldn't dream of missing each once-in-a-lifetime show. The Hoot Nights eventually moved from Austin to Chicago when acts such as Susan Voelz, Poi Dog Pondering and Michael Hall relocated there and became a monthly tonic at the world famous Schubas Tavern."

**Roky Erickson is NOT going to be at this show. This is a tribute to his band & music

Um, wow. I guess it was because of us:

Sorry for the mistake on our part.

And IF anyone is cribbing our stuff, we're happy to share -- we'll even give you a feed as long as you credit us and link back to our site. And most of our 2,300+ weekly listings are much more accurate than this one.

Aha. Now I see how this may have happened. A less than super-careful look at the show poster could give one the impression, especially if they weren't up on Carlin's Hoot Night programs. Still sorry we botched it:

Gregory, says:

Wasn't this Method Entertainment's tribute night?

I'm confused.
