Stolen Stradivarius returns to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra after 20 years
In 1985, a Stradivarius violin was stolen from a Dallas Symphony Orchestra musician's home. In 2005, the violin, expected to have been crafted in 1727, was discovered as part of an auction in London's Bonham Auction House. While the DSO received the insurance money when it was stolen, they bought it back from the insurance company once found. The violin is expected to be worth $500,000 to $750,000.
The DSO's senior associate concertmaster Gary Levinson will play the Strad this weekend at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.
