SMU Ike Ofoegbu named to All-Conference USA basketball third team

Ofoegbu is leading the Mustangs in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (7.6), the first SMU player to do that since Jeryl Sasser in 2000-01.

SMU senior captain Ike Ofoegbu was named third-team All-Conference USA, as voted by the league’s head coaches and select media.

Ofoegbu is leading the Mustangs in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (7.6), the first SMU player to do that since Jeryl Sasser in 2000-01 (22nd pick by Orlando in 2001 NBA Draft). In conference action, Ofoegbu finished fifth in scoring at 16.0 points, second in rebounding with 7.9 boards per game, and second with 3.44 offensive boards per outing. He also led the league in three-point shooting, hitting 51.3 percent (20-39) in C-USA games. Ofoegbu enters the tournament with a league-best 10 double-doubles that includes a stretch of five straight from Feb. 10 to Feb. 24. In the last seven conference games, he averaged 19.9 points and 10.9 rebounds while shooting 51.4 percent (44-86) from the field, 57.1 percent (16-28) from long range, and 68.6 percent (35-51) at the free throw line.

The No. 11 seed SMU Mustangs (14-16, 3-13 Conference USA) face the No. 6 seed Southern Miss Golden Eagles (19-10, 9-7 C-USA) in the first round of the Conference USA Championships this Wednesday in Memphis at 2:30 p.m. If the Mustangs advance, they will face No. 3 seed Houston in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
