UPDATED: Crem is closed
Lower Greenville establishments calling it quits.
LOWER GREENVILLE According to Avi Adelman, Crem closed a few weeks ago (we missed that one) and Firehouse had its doors "involuntarily" shut. We've confirmed Crem and are working on Firehouse, but Avi generally knows his stuff.
UPDATE: See Teresa's comment below. Firehouse is not closed.

Gexa Pavilion in Dallas announces summer '12 concert season
Was there Saturday night - the place still blows
Teresa Gubbins, staff:
avi is mistaken about firehouse; it hasn't closed. part of its regular hours are that they're not open monday or tuesday, but they haven't shut down.

Nothing personal Theresa, but this story was written on Saturday evening, not Monday evening.

I find it problematic that your site posts information that is not verified or true. Firehouse was not involuntarily closed. It was closed for one day to switch managers and concepts. Avi and the owner of firehouse do not get along. Anything from Avi about them (or vice versa) should be read with skepticism.

Thats a fair criticism "mirandak," but...
1) As you'll notice, we made it clear that we had not confirmed Avi's report on Firehouse
2) That is why we have the comment boards. So that there is a check if we ever get bad information, or write something that our readers perceive as being biased
Definitely appreciate you weighing in on the issue. If there is anything else you think people should know about the Firehouse situation, please tell us. We definitely want to hear.

But by adding the comment that "Avi usually knows his stuff," you are inferring that it is correct. The publicist for Firehouse (Dawn Quiett) told Mike Orren that it was not true. And you still have not taken it down or corrected it. You could destroy someone's business by running incorrect information. I don't look at the site often but everytime I do I find tons of errors. I know you want people to post corrections but why should we have to be your factcheckers and proofreaders?

Mike Orren, verified:
mirandak, I posted the story saying that Avi was making the claim and we were verifying it. And when we did, we corrected it. We never take down stories, because doing so leaves the item uncorrected and the best way to get the word out that the item was in error is to have the original story findable. I don't understand how you can't see the correction above. And the restaurant was, indeed closed, albeit for a short time.
I could have been more precise in my language. Avi generally knows what is going on in terms of businesses open/closed in the neighborhood. I've made no secret of the fact that I often disagree with Avi's opinions, and the volume at which he types them. But, as the old saw goes, I'll defend his right to state them to the death. Regardless, I've never known Avi to intentionally post a falsehood.
Please share with us any errors you find, though. We will happily correct them. Unlike many media outlets, we don't claim infallibility and we'll always correct a mistake on the page where it was made. Your blanket statement about errors, without examples though, strikes me as at least as unfounded as any assertion that Firehouse was closed.
You don't have to be our factchecker. But you are welcome and encouraged to correct us, unedited, as you've done here. That's an important distinction. I don't know of another media outlet in town that offers that power to its community.

I guess I will just stop looking at this site since I know I cannot trust the information in it. Offering community input is great but when that input can end up harming people or their livelyhoods I am not sure that there should not be a better gatekeeper.

I have to agree with mirandak. If someone reads that a story (not a comment) that says X, and X is false, and then the reader never returns to same page (which seems far more often the case) then the disseminated misinformation is never corrected. That is, a majority of people who read the original story go about with misinformation. It seems much more important to get it right up front.
Saying, "We've confirmed Crem and are working on Firehouse, but Avi generally knows his stuff" confuses the issue. It almost sounds like its confirmed and not confirmed. (BTW, Avi has such an axe to grind, one ought never take anything he says at face value.)
It would have been clearer to simply say, "We've confirmed Crem and claims about Firehouse are only rumors." Better yet don't mention it at all until its not a rumor.

I agree that's it's certainly best to try to have the best info when the story is posted. But the online format is MUCH more conducive to actually getting a correction out, than the corrections printed in the DMN in section z, page 300. The listing for Firehouse is still alive and well in the restaurant section of the site, and I seriously doubt that anyone looking for it will happen across this article instead of the restaurant page itself.

If you search for firehouse the incorrect story comes up. Before the listing for the restaurant. The point of most journalism is not to have to corrections--to confirm your facts before running anything. And one should always consider the source. After hearing the rumor, The Dallas Morning News and the Observer called the publicist and the restaurant to find out what was going on. Pegasus news did not. Just posting incorrect info and not removing the wrong info even after being corrected. If you look at this link in the IE bar-It still says that Firehouse may be closed. As a site that wants to make it money from advertisers which would include bars and restaurants. It would seem to be in PN's best interest to run the most correct info. Firehouse and its sister businesses Stout and Whisky Bar might have been potential advertisers. After this, maybe not so much.
