Four file for two Lancaster ISD Board seats

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (3)

The absence of an official from the Lancaster School District Administration to accept their applications did not deter two candidates from filing on the last day for board seats in the Lancaster ISD. To be sure there was no doubt that her application was filed in a timely manner one candidate contacted the Office of Secretary of State for advice. On the recommendation of that office she prepared a statement for a worker to sign as proof of her filing.

Filing for District 6 is veteran educator Dr. Marjorie King who will run against incumbent Nannette Vick in District 6. This will be the first time Ms. Vick, board president, has had an opponent in her three-term tenure.

Dr. King brings an impressive resume’ to the contest that includes nearly fifty years experience in education at the public school and university levels. She began her career in education in the Midland, Texas ISD as a middle school history teacher Two years later she came to Dallas ISD as an elementary teacher. Her extraordinary capabilities were soon recognized and she was asked to head up the student reading clinic at David W. Carter High School. She later became a reading specialist for Dallas ISD and was tapped to train and supervise her Dallas colleagues in strategies for the effective teaching of reading. After her retirement from Dallas she accepted a position with Dallas Baptist University to share her expertise with teachers enrolled in the university. She retired as an Adjunct Professor a few years ago to spend more time with her family and grandchildren

Dr. King says that she believes her training and background in education gives her the opportunity to bring to the board and school district a level of knowledge and expertise that will benefit the district as a whole and the children in particular.

Her credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree with all levels teacher certification from SMU in 1954, as well as a Masters Degree in history from SMU in 1962. She received her PhD in Elementary Education with a specialty in reading instruction from North Texas University in 1976.

In District 3 a new comer to politics in Lancaster, Barbara Dixon, will challenge long-time board member Carolyn Morris. Ms. Morris, an advocate for parents who have children experiencing unusual problems in school, provides counseling services to guide the parents through difficult situations. Ms. Morris has said she tries to carry her advocacy forward to the board table for children, parents and taxpayers.

As additional information about the candidates and the race develops Pegasus News will report it.

How exciting to have, as a school board candidate, Dr. Marjorie King who has dedicated her life to not only teaching children but to also teaching educators. Her education and experience should not be taken lightly. Let us hope that Lancaster voters understand who they have in their midst and how this lady has what it takes to make a significant contribution to the children of this town.

Barbara Dixon hosts a "Meet the Candidate" forum this coming Friday a 7:00 p.m. The forum is booked for Lancaster Recreation Center, 1700 S Veterans Memorial Parkway, in Lancaster.

Ms Dixon has so far maintained a low profile campaign with few disclosures regarding her supporters, funding, or positions on ISD matters. Voters are encouraged to meet and greet the candidate and discover the answers for themselves.

I was just commenting on the HB 2564 Open Records Act restrictions. Does Pegasus need another volunteer to help gather and transcribe local government records, specifically local campaign forms? See who contributed, how much? Who spent what with which operatives?

I would go down to Lancaster offices and help pull the post-May election filings if needed. I admit I'm curious about Ms Dixon funding background. Moot, I suppose, since she lost. If, just for hypothetical example, she had funds coming in from either of the PACS on the bond election, that would be newsy.

How does PegNews organize such research?
