UNT to set up memorial for dearly departed albino squirrel
Did you know about the Albino Squirrel Preservation Society at UNT? Maybe not unless you happened to live nearby. It wasn't a unique, American college club but it was a special one, honoring a little furry white friend to 31,000-ish students. Mr. Albino Squirrel died this past August when a hawk swooped down and swooped it. (Some students were so mad at the hawk that they reportedly threw rocks at it.)
That wasn't the end of the story. Now comes this from the North Texas Daily:
The rodent's memory will continue to inspire students at NT for years to come when a memorial commemorating its life is revealed at the Willis Library, said Melody Kelly, associate dean of university libraries.
The photo collage will commemorate the albino squirrel, formerly considered an unofficial mascot and good luck symbol at NT, Kelly said. The wall adjacent to the Cyber Cafe in the Willis Library will have space designated for the memorial, she said. Library staff and members of the Albino Squirrel Preservation Society have not chosen a date for the unveiling, but Kelly said it would be before finals.
Finals are in early- to mid-May.
