A look back to the Dallas Night invasion at SXSW

SXSW 2007 will be one to remember for the entire city of Dallas. Industry writer Matt Sonzala, Houston So Real, introduced a never before showcase strictly for Dallas artists called "Dallas Night" which was presented by Ozone Magazine & Urban South Entertainment, and hosted by me, Edward 'Pookie' Hall (Pookie from Urban South) along with 'Definition DJ' and mixtape heavyweight DJ Drop. This line-up included top local acts such as the following: Thesis, Verbal Seed, PPT, The Gator Main, Lil Peace, Big Chief, Grifter Records, Big Ben, Kotton Mouth, Mr. Pookie & Lucci and more.

Thesis started the night off with "Pink Lemonade" sounds of pure soul touching some of the hardest rappers. I could hear voices in the background asking who is she signed with and how do we get her on a feature. Verbal Seed's act landed them an article in the Boston Globe and 'Rally Boy' Big Ben had the likes of Warner Bros. eyeing his performance.

Lil Peace, who grace the cover of the SXSW mini edition of Ozone Magazine, "Hit Da Dance Floor" with his club banger and single that's been in consistent rotation on 97.9 'The Beat'. Mr. Pookie & Lucci along with members Nitty & Dougski gave a raw essence of why they are still at the top of their game. I have yet to see a Rap group in Dallas with a stronger multi-cultural fan base. We can take them to Denton right now and sell the show out.

If you haven't gotten a chance to see 'The Gator Main' perform then please be on lookout for his next show. I'm kind of sratching my head on why we do not see more coverage and exposure on him. Big Chief showed why West Dallas is the realest while Kotton Mouth let it be known why he is 'King Kong' with Stubb-a-lean backing him and Crawl 2 Ball with some of my favorite songs such as 'I Like'.

No one can deny that the group PPT (Pikahsso, Picnic & Tahiti) put on what seemed to be a real concert performance. I have to say it is a very big difference listening to their music and watching their perform live. They completely controlled the crowd with energy from the beginning to the end of the set.

There were not any performances from Tum Tum and Big Tuck due to flight errors but Lex Lu, Small Soldier & Chase Pat, all of Grifter Records, closed the showcase to a monster line-up representing our city. Definition DJ & mixtape heavyweight DJ Drop officially ended the party on the 1's & 2's turning what was once a showcase into a complete club scene. The crowd went from watching to being watched as they jump on stage dancing from right to left putting the stamp to a Dallas takeover of Austin, TX and SXSW 2007.

Flyer artwork of this showcase can now be seen in the Ozone Magazine mini edition of SXSW 2007. I have plenty of copies for anyone that is interested. This issue is a collector's edition for the city of Dallas with pics and articles from some of your local favorites such as Money Waters who confused everyone by performing on the Friday line-up with Pimp C and Bun of UGK, Crime Mob, the What It Dew family and more. Understand now.... okay, you with me. Put this copy with your 'Dallas Got Next' issue. Yeah, yeah.... 'Dallas Got Now' but the press will say 'NEXT' which has no expiration date on it. Show me some "Dallas Got Now' press then we can move on. Until then, no one sees "NOW" but us. "Got Now' will put us back in the dark if we don't man up and "Get It Now". Only with the exception of a few and I can count them on my hand. Real talk!

I must give a personal thank you to Matt Sonzala who has played an important role in my career personally.

SXSW 2007 pictures courtesy of Urban South Entertainment will be available next week.

Post your comments and feedback letting us know what you think about our coverage of the Hip Hop & Rap community in Dallas. I'm Edward 'Pookie' Hall known as Pookie from Urban South "The Walking Commercial"

Be on the look out for fast rising artist Jonny Kash and his single "Ready Ready" featuring Juvenile.
