UPDATED: Farmers Branch LULAC prexy caught removing immigration vote signs; U.S. Justice Department gets involved

2

Elizabeth Villafranca, President of the Farmers Branch League of United Latin American Citizens and restaurateur, admitted to removing signs supporting Ordinance 2903, which calls for stricter policies on illegal immigration.

Ms. Villafranca states that the signs she took down were in a shopping center and that she was told to take them down by the property owner. It was discovered that she had the signs when she was pulled over by police officers, who had received reports that she was removing signs in addition to planting her own, and was asked to open the trunk of her car.

In the State of Texas, as well as across the United States, it is illegal to remove political signs unless you are the property owner or the person that placed the sign. The person who submitted the complaint to police has confirmed that he will press charges against Villafranca. She believes the situation should be the other way around, however, since signs were placed against the wishes of the property owner.

The public vote over the immigration ordinance will take place on May 12.

UPDATE: The U.S. Justice Department has gotten involved and is now looking into claims that Hispanic voters are being harassed by supporters of immigration ordinance. One of the things they are looking into is whether people were bullied into putting up yard signs supporting the ordinance.
