Rufino Mendoza students rewarded for winning Mavs Reading Challenge
Students in second through fifth grades at Rufino Mendoza got a special start to their Thursday morning with a pep rally featuring some special Dallas Mavericks.
Mavericks guard Devin Harris along with Mavs mascot Champ rallied with the students bright and early Thursday morning. The special pep rally is the result of the school winning this year’s Mavs Reading Challenge. Students read more than 440,000 minutes!
"You guys deserve a round of applause for reading 200,000 more minutes than any school in the area," said Devin Harris.
This is the ninth year for the reading challenge, which was open to the entire Metroplex. The purpose of the contest is to encourage youngsters in second through fifth grades to read as many minutes as possible for two months.
After the pep rally, students had a chance to talk to Devin Harris and have him sign autographs.
This is the second year in a row Rufino Mendoza has won the Mavs Reading Challenge event.
