UT Dallas hosts science olympiad on Saturday

— There'll be a science-fest going down on Saturday when the Regional Science Olympiad takes place on the campus of UT Dallas.

Students from DFW-area schools will compete in 22 events during the daylong science competition, in such categories as balloon launch glider, tower building, chemistry lab and boomilever, among others.

The Science Olympiad is a nonprofit organization developed to improve the quality of science education, increase student interest in science, and provide recognition of outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. All of this is done through interscholastic competitions where students in grades K-12 (Texas State only offers programs for grades 6-12) can participate at invitational, local, regional, state, and national level competitions against teams from all 50 states.

The tournament is operated mostly by volunteers. You do not need any prior experience; many volunteer positions only require that you show up on the day of the tournament. Volunteer opportunities include proctoring exams, grading tests, and helping others find the right location. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the day, so you can volunteer at your own convenience. For more information about the olympiad or volunteer work, call 972-883-2350.
