American Airlines and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Board announced today that American will lease a 344,000 square-foot maintenance hangar on the east side of the airport.

American currently leases four hangars and a warehouse on the airport's west side. This additional hangar on the east side can simultaneously accommodate several wide-body and narrow-body aircraft.

American will spend approximately $900,000 to prepare the hangar for operation. This expense will be reimbursed by the airport.

"This is a strategic opportunity for DFW to receive lease revenue from a major facility that has been idle for some time," said Jeff Benvegnu, Vice President - Aviation Real Estate at DFW International Airport. "Putting the building back to work will benefit the airport as well as our Owner Cities."

Initially, a crew of approximately 30 maintenance employees will be assigned to the hangar. That crew is planned to increase in the short term to about 80 employees. The facility will also provide the capacity to support American's plans to expand its outside contract maintenance business; thus, the hangar is expected to provide more jobs for significantly more employees as the business expands.
