Denton’s Pecan Creek Elementary publishes book to help kids and trees in Uganda
Fourth-grade kiddos at Pecan Creek Elementary—the same school that recently created that super-patriotic 'American Voices' album—have recently completed work on the school’s first published book project, entitle dMore Than Just a Mvule Tree.
The book, which features the writing and illustrations of the fourth grade class, will be presented to the public today at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the school cafeteria, located at 4400 Lakeview Boulevard in Denton.
Natalie Mead, fourth-grade teacher at Pecan Creek, facilitated the process of establishing research, writing, illustrating, editing, and marketing teams to provide an opportunity for each student to engage in the project.
"This project is a multifaceted endeavor," she said. "The students utilized their science conservation and writing skills to publish the book, which proceeds will benefit The Mvule Tree project of Uganda, Africa. This project will replenish the Mvule Tree in the villages of Uganda as it simultaneously provides school tuition for the Ugandan children, who help plant and maintain the trees.
“All proceeds from our book sales will go directly towards the purchase of Mvule trees,” Mrs. Mead said.
Cost of the book is $5 with about 70 percent going to the Mvule project. The books were printed by Eagle Press of Denton.
Surprisingly enough, McKinney ISD students at Vega elementary announced last week their plans to send books to Uganda and India as well.
