This militant, right-wing NeoChristian group calls itself "Weed and Feed" - as if their primary mission is to find people in the community whom they consider to be "weeds".
And the topic of this meeting - they are arguing over who gets control over a new government facility.
Gary Griffith should find himself quite among friends, there... although Jesus might not.

Sanders, we talking about the same group? There's nothing religious about it at all. And Weed and Seed is a US Department of Justice program.
I'll confess that this group is one that I've supported as it has overall done great work towards improving my neighborhood, albeit with some controversy:

And it was a major inspiration for Our Little Business:

The debate over the facility is not one of control, but of location. And as it is my understanding that a substantial portion of the money for the facility will come from investment attracted from this organization, supplementing the bond monies.
Like I said -- this is one topic on which I could never be called an impartial observer. But I'm curious, Sanders, what's the beef here?

I have several reasons for presuming that the Weed and Feed group is as I described it.
First and Foremost - the name. The tone of this is similar to that put out by most other NeoChristian groups which seek to promote their values, while attacking others for theirs.
Second, they hold their meetings at a local church. Granted the CoC leadership are some SERIOUSLY good people - but I've personally had some serious problems with some of their congregants.
Finally, there's the fact that they have chosen to endorse Gary Griffith. In my community, dual yard-signs have been appearing everywhere. One is a vote-Griffith sign, the other is a white cross that says "He is Risen".
Griffith is very active in trying to appeal to the religious groups in Dallas. I believe that, to do that, one would have to promote some very awful things - NeoChristian values.
So - we have a candidate who wishes to appeal to southern religious zealots, meeting at a church, discussing how to divvy up state property.
At any other point in history I'd just say "No Biggee" - but over the last decade the NeoChristian Insurgency has done some terrible things to this country.

I'm glad that this group helped get Pegasus going. It reminds me of a story an old Jewish lady told me when I was a wee one, going to synogogue.
She thought the Nazis were NICE guys. They were always so handsome, and clean-cut. If a woman had too many bags, a soldier would gladly help her carry them to wherever she was going.
If you invited one to a party, he would show up sharply dressed, tell very entertaining and socially appropriate stories, and leave without getting embarassingly drunk.
They were great guys - except for this one little-bitty, teeny-tiny quirk.
That's what we have today in the US with the NeoChristian Insurgents.
So, when I hear that the NeoChristians have helped someone somewhere, I temper that with what I know they have done elsewhere... and I don't invite them to any parties.

Sanders, I think you're misunderstanding some of the facts here.
The name "Weed and Seed" is a moniker handed down directly by the US Department of Justice. Are you saying it is a NeoChristian org? (And, at the risk of opening a can of worms, what does "NeoChristian" mean?)
Here's the basics on the program: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ccdo/ws/welc...
The W&S designation is given to high crime areas that have a group working to improve the situation. The Weeding is crime and the Seeding is business. With the W&S designation comes federal money that pays for some economic development activity, but primarily for more police patrols in the high crime area.
Griffith and Chaney are "sponsors" of the organization. That is a requirement to get the W&S funding. They are being honored for their help to the group but have no voting or governing standing in this meeting. (And frankly, my impression was that while Chaney was always extremely active, Griffith was much less so when there wasn't an election going on.)
The debate over state property is this: The last bond election approved a library and a recreation center for the area. Most of the volunteers involved in FRI believe that the biggest bang for the buck occurs if the two are co-located. More activity, more people, and cost savings on infrastructure allowing more of the funds to be spent on useful features. But last I heard, city staff is recommending that they be placed separately. While FRI has no ability to dictate where they are placed, it strikes me that they have every right to discuss and advocate their positions.
The meeting is at a church because there are no other public facilities in our neighborhood that can house a meeting. At least until the library and rec center get built.

Can opened...
NeoChristian - literally, "New Christian".
It's a kind of Xianity that, for starters, does not believe in the separation of church and state.
They include Christian Coalition, Moral Majority, KKK and many other national relgious/political organizations.
More insidiously, they are a grass-roots movement - like the Taliban in Afghanistan. They infest our churches and preach hatred - especially towards Muslims, but to Mexicans and Jews and other "wooly-headed mud people" as well.
They refer to their grass-roots supporters as "the base". Coincidentally, the phrase "al Quaeda" translates directly into English as "the base".
Al Quaeda and the NeoChristian base are similar in a variety of other ways - but mostly they are both just faith-based grass-movement attempts by militant religious zealots to seize control of various governments - through violence if necessary.
So, when I hear that a grass-roots group is meeting with a politician at a church to discuss divvying up state property - I tend to presume they are NeoChristians - doing nasty things.
I didn't used to be like that - but then I watched televangelist Rev. Bush's career take off like a rocket and learned better.

The short answer to "is the US DoJ a NeoChristian organization" - the answer is definitively, "yes".
All of the US Attorneys who went against (or simply did not strongly support) the insurgency have been fired - and replaced by folks loyal to the insurgency.
Fortunately, some of their crimes in committing that act have been uncovered and could end up emasculating the movement.

Regarding your specific organization - I don't know for certain that they are a militant, Christian extremist group.
They have ALL of the earmarks of one - but may very well be just as benign as you think.
But after the last decade or so, I've become bigoted against religious zealots. So when I see them getting active in the community, or see some politician coddling up to them - I tend to go sour on the politician, the group, and the members of the group and the church.
Whenever I think I'm being too harsh on the poor little zombies, I just remember a picture of an Iraqi child with his head blown off - and I remember why I don't like NeoChristians.

I would like to take an opportunity to apologize for responding earlier today to a post by Mr. Kaufman. Had I spent more than 2 minutes reading his post and realizing how bitterly biased he is in general, I would have been more inclined to ignore him as it is evident most people in these posts do.
I commit to spend more time on a particular site becoming familiar with the bigots before wasting my time putting my two cents worth into responses to them.
