0

Latret Thompson, 17, from Dallas, was reportedly involved in an argument with a West Mesquite High student at the school's theater show on Saturday when he called two friends, Keldrick Payton and Lebreon Johnson, to back him up. After grabbing a shotgun, Payton fired into a crowd, injuring a bystander.

All three teens are being held on bond and will be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The following is an incident update from the West Mesquite High School website:

RE: Incident at Spring Show on May 12

We would like to provide you with some information regarding an incident that occurred on campus Saturday night. Although there may be rumors circulating about the events that transpired, we feel that it is important that you know the facts in this case.

Outside the school during the drill team’s Spring Show, a WMHS student was shot in the leg by individuals who do not attend West Mesquite High School or any other Mesquite school. The student’s injury was not life threatening, and he is in stable condition. The individuals who were responsible for the shooting have been arrested and are in police custody.

Student safety at school and school-related events is our highest priority, and we have taken steps to ensure that even greater security measures are in place going forward. The administration is working with the Mesquite Police to complete this investigation. Although we do not anticipate any further disruption related to the events that took place on Saturday, additional police officers were on campus today and will be present at [Monday's] Spring Football Game.
