Plano cop caught on red-light camera gets off scot-free

PLANO — Channel 11 has a pretty good expose about a Plano police officer who ran a red light while not on an emergency call, but was let off the hook for a ticket. The site appears to have a video of said infraction, except that the video keeps getting stuck on a Tracy Rowlett ad.

The story drills down pretty good on Gary Mills, the hearing officer who reviews the red light camera footage. He refuses to respond to their questions, and he doesn't keep records of the hearings he conducts. Meanwhile, here's a statistic: From January to March, 12,000 cars were caught by red light cameras in Plano.

That was a pretty interesting interview that CBS did with Mr. Mills.

He knew he shouldn't talk to the press, but he figured that since he and his buddies ARE the law - there's nothing to risk.

Then, when the interviewer asked him about why he let the Plano cop off, he got nervous and suddenly remembered that he was at work and needed to get back inside to do something.

The sad thing is that Jan Easterling, the head of Public Relations for the Plano Police has chosen to remain silent on why corruption is happening.

Sanders, last I checked, Jan Easterling was a Dallas Deputy Chief over the NE division. Or is this a different person?

Boy did I mess that one up.

She came on in a different spot, right after the story on Mills, and I thought she was just doing a really lousy job of not speaking to the issue.

There is no law that says that you have to enforce traffic laws. Any time a ticket is given out for traffic law violations it is at the discretion of the officer. If they like you forget about it. If it wasn't that way police officers could not ever drive one block. Besides what would happen if a police officer needs cover from an officer that he has given a ticket to. He might just get a baby blanket.

Someone owes me an explaination on why I have to pay my red light ticket and this officer doesn't. That's discrimination. I was making a right turn on red, yet I didn't come to a complete stop before turning right on red and the city of plano isued me a red light ticket. According to the red light camera law, it states that when the light turns red and you are at a intersection then you are issed a ticket. But my case is that I wasn't in the intersection. I saw the news about the cop that ran the red light. Everybody is hush-hush about it. I want an explination because I think I, along with everyone else who has been ticketed for red light wants to know why we have to pay and this cop doesn't. The person that reviews the video of red light runners needs to keep records and doucments. I will ask the court why I was sited a ticked and not the cop when I go to court for my ticket.

It is a proven fact that more accidents occur at intersections where there is a camera; rear end crashes are common at these intersections. This is nothing but a means to generate revenue. Electronics allow sensors to time it so your vehicle is in the intersection when it turns red. This is probably not being used now, but when revenue is needed, you will be suprised what can happen, like driving up the tollway service road, you will always get stopped at every red light because it is designed to make it "worth" the time savings. Just keep on giving up every one of your rights, one day it will be like the movie where you are charged a credit for saying a curse word.

Personally, I just boycott the businesses in those towns and cities that use red light cameras. The same is becoming true of surveillance cameras. When did it become acceptable for police to sit on their fat, donut eating asses in front of a monitor instead of patrolling the streets? I certainly hope that we aren't paying these officers one dime more than mall security officers who use these same surveillance techniques. In the past cameras would have been considered hearsay evidence and thrown the hell out. Our government agencies should not, and must not be allowed to turn into "profit centers" to generate the additional revenues that "tax payers" are unwilling to give them, or otherwise circumvent the "prudent budgetary constraints" that act as an addition safeguard against a police state.
