7-Eleven opens store in downtown Dallas

DALLAS — The arrival of a 7-Eleven is a signifier of population density, so that's why the opening of one downtown qualifies as news. It's about freaking time, though of course it's located in its "swanky" new HQ, One Arts Plaza, rather than anywhere near where most residents live -- over by, say, the Manor House or the Wilson Building. The story says that "while there are no definite plans, 7-Eleven stores may find their way into other parts of downtown, said Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven's president and chief executive."

I would hardly call this "downtown" for any practical purposes. Yes, I know this area technically qualifies as downtown. But I doubt many people in the main residential core of downtown will use this store. 7-11 is a "convenience" store, yes? There is nothing convenient about the location of this store, except for office workers and residents of One Arts Plaza. I walked to this store from the Meyerson one night a month or so ago (it's been open for quite a while, just without fanfare)...and it definitely was not convenient. The store in Deep Ellum is closer to walk to for me (a downtown resident) than this one.

i lived downtown from '99 to 2004 and it really irked me that southland wouldn't give the area the time of day. i realize that they're in business to make money and don't "owe" anyone anything; but their inability to recognize the downtown population was frustrating
