Fort Worth school board may allow TAKS no-passers to pretend-graduate

FORT WORTH — The Fort Worth school district will consider allowing 617 seniors who did not pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test to go ahead and participate in graduation ceremonies anyway.

This doesn't mean those students get out of having to re-take and pass the test. It just means they'll get to pomp-and-circumstance with their peers instead of having to settle for a second-class mini-ceremony after they finally pass the sucker.

For is it not an essential rite of passage for any high school senior to nod off during the valedictorian's speech, throw mortarboards in the air, save the tassle for their rearview mirror, and get wasted after it's all over? Not to mention the parents -- whose grumbling to the school board is what's spurring this uneasy compromise -- who can't bear to get shafted out of one of the only opportunities they've had for the past $*#! 18 years to finally beam with pride over an achievement by their darling spawn.

The school board will make their decision at an 8 a.m. meeting on Wednesday at the FWISD Board Complex, 2903 Shotts St. The meeting is open to the public.

McKinney is not so lenient; according to McKinney News, McKinney's ISD was impervious to "emotional pleas" from 19 seniors who didn't pass the test, and they won't be allowed to walk the graduation walk.
