— After nearly 20 years, Kathleen's Art Cafe has come to the end of its rope.

The spin-off at Lakeside Market in Plano closed; its last day was Mother's Day. Meanwhile, the original branch on Lovers Lane in Dallas is being overhauled, with a remodel and a name change in the works.

"Someone's working on the sign already," said an employee.

Kathleen's was opened by Kathleen and Robert Ellington in 1988. Its trademarks have been its colossal cakes and desserts, its late-night hours, and the eclectic art by local artists hanging on the walls. The Plano branch opened in 2004.

That's a nice space. I hope a good restaurant goes in there.

There was some kind of ownership change a few years ago, after which there was a definite drop in quality.

Laurie Anderson Laurie Anderson is indescribably delicious. She's hitting McFarlin tonight with her new show, Homeland, and you can bet it will contain intellectual stimulation and pure unadulterated weirdness in equal measure. An album will follow the Homeland tour in 2009. More info
