UPDATE: Colleyville’s Samir Patel a favorite to win out of Scripps National Spelling Bee

ANOTHER UPDATE: Samir is out! In the fifth round he misspelled "clevis."

UPDATE: Samir's in the semis.

The Associated Press is running a feature profile on 13 year-old Samir Patel from Colleyville. According to the feature, Samir is a strong favorite to win it all at this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be taking place live on national television later this week. Patel has been a contender in the past, but always run into dream-shattering words such as "corposant" and "Roscian." But at least this didn't happen to Samir:

Frankly, considering the breathtaking amount of ignorant indifference I see and hear regarding shared fundamental knowledge of the truly educated, l find the recognition that this kid is getting, and the Bee he is part of, an all too rare feel-good salute to young achievers.
