Original Dallas Chili’s bites the big one

As part of a bigger picture redevelopment occurring along Greenville in the Meadow and Manderville neighborhood, the first-ever Chili's restaurant has closed.

Since this veteran eatery is right around the corner from Pegasus News World Headquarters - and since this reporter ate there once every couple of weeks - the news strikes a somewhat personal blow. (And if you think we'll be taking this as a sign to eat more healthy by eliminating saturated fats from our diet... dream on.)

Erin Rice, says:

I know it's a chain restaurant and all, but this hits home. My parents used to tell me stories about their early dates at this Chili's. I know they'll be mildly upset. I suppose the newer Chili's two minutes from their house in Keller will help soften the blow. Or the one 12 minutes away in Roanoke. Or the two 13-18 minutes away in North Richland Hills. Or the two that are 15-20 minutes away in Grapevine... damn there are a lot of Chili's restaurants around.

Oh no! I'm just around the corner, too and would enjoy the yummy southwestern-type salad (a mere 2,800 calories!) a few times a month. sigh Are they tearing the building down?

John Hogan, says:

In an effort to comfort those who may take this opportunity to sink into depression over the loss of a true, Dallas landmark I will interject the fact that the original restaurant, that once had twenty-something Baby-Boomers lined up, out the door and into the parking lot, was demolished to make room for the widening of Greenville Avenue many years ago. It was replaced with a similar building set further back on the same property.

So to those in mourning over the loss of the original Chili's I say, take heart, it is not your old friend that has passed away…you missed that funeral entirely.

Kevin Kunreuther, says:

WHY? WHY? Always Dallas tearing down their landmarks. Not enough they shuttered the Hard Rock Cafe for a House of Snooze - Chili's No 1 is gone (even if it is a rebuilt one). No Big Boy's, No Prince Of Hamburgers. What's next? SNuffer's? The Grenada?
