UT Arlington recognized for Hispanic student success

UTA closes the gap between between Hispanic and non-Hispanic students in college.

ARLINGTON–An American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) study has recognized The University of Texas at Arlington as a trailblazer in “closing the gap” between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white students in college.

UT Arlington had a much greater than average improvement in the gap between non-Hispanic white and Hispanic student graduation rates for the reporting years from 2002-2005.

The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) was cited as playing a major role in UT Arlington’s success. Hispanic students interviewed for the study demonstrated strong leadership potential and gave credit to CMAS for helping improve their leadership skills and learning experiences. Students also say that Casey Gonzales, director of Multicultural Affairs, is a father figure to them and he creates a strong sense of family among the Hispanic students.

UT Arlington also was cited as a particularly good example of “community connection.”

“The university has developed partnerships with many community organizations such as schools, hospitals, businesses, community centers and non-governmental organizations,” the report said. “These partnerships are seen by Hispanic students as evidence of the university’s commitment to Hispanics. At the same time, they provide many opportunities for students to volunteer.”
