UPDATED: 102.1 The Edge fires Josh Venable, while Kiss FM fires Cruz and Gina Lee Fuentes
UPDATE: The layoffs appear to be happening all over Clear Channel and locally also included KISS FM DJs Cruz and Gina Lee Fuentes.
Mista Crain over at Frontburner got a call earlier today from Josh Venable, best-known as Josh from the Adventure Club on 102.1 The Edge. The call was to let his buddy know that KDGE canned him. Apparently the company was eliminating his "position." Venable had been employed at the station since he was 19 years old. What a blow, Dallas radio was so good before this news...

If The Edge didn't suck enough when they added Lex & Terry, they certainly sealed the deal by firing Josh.

The Edge has been pretty crappy for years. This isn't so much surprising as inevitable.

Word from Josh to his email group:
please forward
So here it is.
I went into work Friday for a meeting and found out my position (and all that goes with it) had been eliminated. The station and the show have been a part of my life for almost 15 years. I have no clue what the next step is. I'm sure there will be letter writing campaigns or petitions and for those I am grateful. I can't begin to tell you what you mean to me. There are people on this group that have been there from the beginning. Over the years, it has been my pleasure to play records for you. I hope I've made you happy as well. Don't forget me.
xoxo

Wonder if he pissed someone off. Seems kinda bad for business to suddenly can him considering Adventure Club is so popular (at least, from what I can tell...no clue what the ratings look like). Especially since it seems like now, more than ever, the young-uns listen to local stuff.

I'd consider thinking about weighing the benefits of purchasing XM radio if, you know, it didn't cost money to hear music I can get for free without commercials.

The last bastion of FM for me is/was KERA... but what with every public radio show being available as a free podcast that I can auto download and sync to my player, and the fact that I can now listen to something good instead of Prairie Home News and Notes Celtic Radio Hour.
The iPod killed the radio star.

I loved listening to The Adventure Club and discovering such amazing music that eventually filled my iPod. Josh does have outstanding taste in music and I hope he finds another way to share that talent. How else will my iPod use up all 20 gigs? :)

Clara, I know we'll all miss the Adventure Club, but while Josh finds a new home, here's one way to fill your iPod:

I have an idea, how about people take advantage of the real Adventure Club. You know the one that takes place every freakin night of the week with original music performed for tiny covers. Places like Doublewide, Cavern and Club Dada have a forum for outstanding local acts. People, if you missed the Beard-i-fit at Club Dada seeing Brave Combo alongside brand new acts like Enormous Magic Verb and the Felons, you have only yourself to blame.
Kettle Gallery was full on the last day of the Collaboration show. then most folks went next door for Lovie's cd release. It was a wonderful evening.
Get out, go to a show, support local artists.

Thanks.
No time like the present. Amanda Newman has started booking some great shows on Thursdays, a mix of quality local musicians and random touring acts. This Thursday, Travis Hopper is the artist in residence. He's a really strong songwriter. He opens for San Diego's DIRTY SWEET, Las Vegas' the Day After and headlining are locals: Mic the TIGER
Beard is back at the door thankfully. Last Friday night at Dada was also a treat inasmuch as Kristi Krueger had a concert in memory of her brother, a colonel in the Army killed in Iraq one year ago. She's a fantastic act btw.
I see Cut*Off is playing the Cavern tonight. These guys are great. My favorites Telegraph Canyon are playing Hailey's Wednesday night.
At at the Doublewide: Nov 8 2007 Mystechs (Chicago), The Tah-Dahs, Laura Palmer
Nov 9 2007 The Valentines, Dead Twins, Magnet School
Nov 10 2007 10:00P Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, ODIS, Kristin Leigh
Finally, in two weeks the Felons play with Cut*off and Somebody's Darling, who you really should get out and see.

Wilonsky talks to Clear Channel brass today:
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfai...
Almost as interesting as the Josh talk (including a suggestion that he and/or the Adventure Club could make a comeback or have a final show) was the KZPS discussion.
I heard just today from a radio person in the know that the Lone Star format was being looked at as an unqualified disaster by Clear Channel -- with literally millions of dollars difference in the year-over-year ad revenue. Even said that the KZPS situation was part of the cutbacks at KZPS> My source even suggested that another format change could be in the offing soon.

105.3 could throw on some music instead of strictly talk radio. I sense a new home for Josh, instead of hearing re-runs of Russ Martin.

Travesty for the state of culture in Dallas. I hope Josh finds a better venue for The Adventure Club. I will miss the show. Ever since The Edge switched over from 94.5 it has been downhill.

Brad LaRock, says:
Keep in mind that Clear Channel has been selling off most of their properties to different buyers. That means that the ones they have left will be headed up by sales driven managers that only think that they are program directors and have determined that they know what people want. What will be happening in Dallas Fort Worth Next year is the Arbitron People Meter which actually tells sources what you listen to by picking up a coded signal from a radio station. The results in rankings will astonish you. More information can be found out about the People Meter at www.arbitron.com Radio stations are missing the boat. As we morph into the IPOD age and alternative music sources, radio stations need to get more local, more local time for local acts, more events that feature local acts and constantly create events that bolster the local music scene. Drop the corporate cookie cutter program director and give each market local control of what is put out on the signal. Go back to basics and do what put radio where it is. Be local. You will never hear a local band on XM or Sirius. Local radio is free, however not local enough. Encourage your favorite radio station to be...local.

One thing I liked about the Adventure Club is that it did not focus on local acts. The Adventure Club presented quality music that you otherwise would not hear on the radio, regardless of whether the band hailed from Dallas or Denmark. In my opinion, this focus on quality over proximity is what allowed the show to prosper for as long as it did.

I was there when Josh did his first show, back when the Edge really was alternative. It was a pleasure to see him prosper, and a disappointment to watch the rest of the station gradually decline into corporate crap, just like everywhere else. But this direction was set in motion with the deregulation of broadcast ownership. It's created chains of McStations; I saw it coming 15 years ago. The radio industry is run by a bunch of suits who don't even like music, they're just in it for the money.
Many mention I-Pod as killing radio. I would add to that satellite and Internet stations, where I have found numerous great formats. But these mediums could never have flourished so rapidly if radio hadn't sucked.
Josh is a smart, talented guy and he will find success elsewhere. As for radio's future, I don't think it's equally as bright.
