If there is one woman who can rival Salma Hayek’s portrayal of Frida Kahlo, the only female Mexican artist who has truly achieved cult status, it’s Dallas’ own Cora Cardona.
Most know Cora as the engine that runs Teatro Dallas. And if you’ve ever seen her in full Frida drag, well, you would think you were seeing Frida’s ghost.
So, I guess it’s pretty fitting that today during Day of the Dead celebrations that Cora is going to paint on the infamous unibrow yet again as part of Teatro Dallas’ annual fundraiser event that will honor the 100th anniversary of Frida Kahlo.
This year, the fundraiser is titled “Noche de Muertos en La Casa Azul,” (Night of the Deceased in the Blue House). The title of the fundraiser draws from Kahlo’s home outside Mexico City. The home, known as the Blue House, was where the artist was born and died. Today it is a museum in her honor.
And tonight, Cora and Teatro Dallas will honor Kahlo with a program that includes the screening of a documentary film based on the life of Kahlo titled “A Ribbon Around a Bomb,” the recitation of a short poem by Costa Rican poet Alfredo Cardona Peña, an auction touted to fit every pocketbook and prizes for those women brave enough to sport the unibrow and come dressed as Frida.
Also, almost forgot to mention, there will be plenty of music, finger foods and drinks.
Ticket prices at the door range from $30-$50.
It’s for a good cause and one more excuse to honor the legendary artist during her special year.
