PLANO Doug & Bruski’s has become Jerseyville Classic, an almost-identical sports-themed restaurant and bar with many (all?) of the items that were on the Doug & Bruski menu.
The Jerseyville "concept" -- which seems to be a restaurant-bar with sports memorabilia -- was developed by Yomi Martin, co-founder of Vokal Clothing, who'd worked with Dallas restaurant designer Carlos Goyne, and has been trying unsuccessfully to launch a branch in his hometown St. Louis for two years. They hooked up with Douglas Czufin and Bruce Lazarus, whose Dave & Buster's clone hadn't produced the kind of financial results they'd anticipated, plus Dallas Cowboys linebacker Akin Ayodele.
Ayodele's participation has already produced media gold, at least at the DMN, who've written or blogged about the place at least 10 times in the past month (Tony Romo visited the place!!!) including today's fawning profile written by "visual arts writer" Michael Granberry, who also gave the restaurant an embarrassingly effusive 3-star review in December 2005. (Sample line: "I'd have to conclude the obvious and say Doug and Bruski's is a touchdown.")
All sympathies to Doug and, um, Bruski, because they're stuck with a space at the Shops at Willow Bend, an excellent mall that's tragically overlooked in favor of the much cheesier Stonebriar. But the menu always seemed calculated, with signature dishes such as French fries topped with cheese, bacon, and green onion and served with ranch dressing.

What's "Jersey" about french fries topped with cheese, bacon, and green onion and served with ranch dressing. Enquiring minds want to know.

It's the large number of football jerseys decking the walls that gives Jerseyville its name. If the restaurant were a celebration of hockey, it might be called Sweaterville.

Put another way, it's football jersey and not Springsteen Jersey.

Thanks for the clarifiction. I knew Jersey had some strange foods (like "rippers", which is actually a deep fried hot dog, and their own version of a texas weiner), so I was totally thrown off track by the Jersey reference.

I sure hope the food is improved over Dave and Bruskie's. I ate there one time, and the food was so bland and blah, it was a real disappointment.

Jerseyville Classic is providing the venue for The Plano Early Lions Club to hold a charity fund-raiser Texas Hold-'em Tournament. For details, see http://www.planolions.org and download the brochure.
