TCU women’s tennis’ Babanova claims title in San Diego

Maria Babanova, a freshman on the TCU women's tennis team, defeated Rebecca Kwan of UC-Irvine by a score of 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-3 to claim the Flight No. 3 singles championship at the SDSU Fall Classic No. 2 on Sunday.

Fellow freshman Idunn Hertzberg also competed in the Flight No. 1 singles championship on Sunday, falling short to San Diego State's Holly Bagshaw by a score of 6-3, 7-5.

The TCU netters earned another championship on Sunday, as Babanova and Hertzberg defeated UC-Irvine's Bartlett and Borowicz 9-7 to take the Flight No. 2 doubles consolation title.

With Babnova's win on Sunday, the TCU women's tennis team earned its second singles main draw championship of the fall season. Nina Munch-Soegaard won five matches to claim the title at The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, in October.

The women's tennis team has now completed the fall season and will return to action on Feb. 9, 2008 at Texas.

ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships

The TCU women's tennis doubles team of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska fell in the semifinals of the 2007 ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Saturday to the ninth-ranked team of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame by a score of 6-4, 6-3.

"We played a tough, veteran Notre Dame team today," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "They played an excellent match and are very deserving of the finals. We played hard and were just overmatched."

The No. 14 team of Harkins and Sydorska won two matches in the tournament, defeating Fresno Pacific's Karavayeva and Kolkotsky 8-0 and pulling the upset over Georgia Tech's third-ranked team of McCray and Miller by a score of 8-6.

The loss concludes the fall season for the duo, ending with a 7-3 record, including a 2-2 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
