Texas Woman’s volleyball place three on all-academic team

Three Texas Woman’s University volleyball players - Jessica Crow, Sharon Schaffner, and Kandis Schroeder - have been selected to the 2007 Lone Star Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team.

Two other TWU volleyball student-athletes - Katie King and Danielle Pegues - were named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes need at least a 3.20 grade point average and must be at least a sophomore. All academically qualified student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The All-Academic Team is selected by the league’s Sports Information Directors, who vote on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.

TWU had the most players chosen for the 2007 LSC All-Academic Team amongst the conference’s 13 volleyball squads. Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Abilene Christian University, and Texas A&M University-Kingsville put two players apiece on the team. SWOSU senior outside hitter Paula Harry was selected as the 2007 LSC Volleyball Academic Player of the Year.

Crow, a sophomore setter, has been the catalyst of the Pioneers’ offense this season. She is averaging 10.78 assists per game and has totaled a remarkable 1,003 assists for the year. Her 25 service aces and 250 digs are the third-most on the TWU roster. A product of Longview, Texas, Crow is a kinesiology major with a 3.91 GPA.

Schaffner, a junior right side from Henrietta, Texas, is a psychology major with a 3.91 GPA. She has 161 kills, 43 set assists, 16 service aces, 440 serve receptions, 247 digs, and 47 total blocks to her credit this season. This is the second year in a row that Schaffner has received LSC academic recognition. In 2006, she was named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Schroeder, who was also picked for the 2006 LSC Volleyball All-Academic Team, is a junior middle blocker from Windthorst, Texas. Her 90 total blocks (seven block solos/83 block assists) are tied for the TWU team lead and her 269 kills are the second most on the Pioneers’ roster. She also averages 3.00 points per game, the second-highest total on the TWU squad. Schroeder is a mathematics major with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Junior outside hitter Katie King has been the Pioneers’ most consistent offensive weapon this season. She leads TWU in kills (323), kills per game (4.36), points (340.5), and points per game (4.60). King, a family and consumer sciences major from Kaufman, Texas, has a 3.38 GPA.

Pegues, a sophomore middle blocker from Marble Falls, Texas, is an occupational therapy major with a 3.41 GPA. A part-time starter for the Pioneers, she has totaled 83 kills, 17 assists, and 31 blocks this season.

The Pioneers finished their 2007 regular season with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-6 mark in LSC play. TWU will face Abilene Christian University on Thursday, November 8, at 5:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship being held in Canyon, Texas.
