Coppell ISD students reprising turkey drive

— Students from all Coppell ISD schools will bring frozen turkeys to their schools for donation to the North Texas Food Bank. In its sixth year, Kids 4 Turkeys has expanded from one school donating 200 turkeys to a district-wide donation of more than 23,000 pounds of turkeys. Last year's donation was valued at more than $30,000, saving the Food Bank the cost of purchasing the product for distribution.

The turkeys will be distributed by the North Texas Food Bank to its 764 feeding and education programs in 13 North Texas counties.

Kids 4 Turkeys was created by Coppell PE teacher Tammy Gilstrap and is now coordinated by Service Learning teachers at 15 schools in Coppell ISD.

A high school student dressed in a giant 6' turkey costume will welcome parents, children, and community members as they arrive with their frozen turkeys at Cottonwood Creek Elementary. Little red wagons pulled by students will carry frozen turkeys from the parents' vehicles to the collection area on the school porch at elementary schools. Volunteers will place frozen turkeys inside North Texas Food Bank boxes stacked on pallets. Full pallets will be loaded onto Food Bank trucks for distribution to area agencies.
